1. Curated list of new Linux CLI commands to use:

Path & latency diagnostics

  • trippy → a modern TUI traceroute with real-time per-hop stats, TUI graphs, and support for ICMP/TCP/UDP probing

  • gping → ping with a live graph in the terminal, supports multiple hosts simultaneously

  • mtr → continuous traceroute + ping hybrid; now with --json and TCP probing for ICMP-filtered paths

  • ttl → A Rust based mtr TUI, ECMP aware - gives ASN, GeoIP, IX detection ttl 8.8.8.8; sudo ttl 8.8.8.8 --flows 4 -p udp # ECMP multi-path view; sudo ttl example.com --dscp 46 # QoS validation

  • gobgp / asn → BGP/ASN lookup and traceroute enrichment

Packet analysis

  • termshark → a Wireshark-like TUI for analyzing pcaps in the terminal
  • tshark → structured packet analysis with JSON/field output for pipelines
  • tcpdump → still the capture standard, but use ring buffers (-C 100 -W 10) for intermittent faults

DNS

  • doggo / dog → a modern dig replacement with colorful output and DoH/DoT support
  • dnspyre → DNS benchmarking and propagation testing from the terminal
  • dnsglobe → watch DNS propagation across global resolvers (from your earlier list)

Connections & sockets

  • ss → the proper replacement for netstat (net-tools is unmaintained); ss -ti shows per-socket RTT and retransmits. My fab is ss -tulanp
  • bandwhich → see which processes are using bandwidth, live
  • gping / iperf3 → iperf3 now emits --json for graphing or CI gating

Device telemetry

  • gnmic → gNMI CLI for streaming state from modern Arista/Cisco/Juniper/Nokia gear, with an interactive YANG browser
  • ttg → ttg uses snmpv2/v3 to pull interface and displays bandwidth usage
